Coweta students outperform state in 3-8th grade Milestone Assessment exams

State Milestone Assessment results for the spring of 2018 were released Friday by the Georgia Department of Education, and Coweta County students continue to outperform state-wide results.

Overall, Coweta County School System students in grades 3 through 8 showed higher rates of academic mastery on the annual grade and subject exams.

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System is the state’s comprehensive student testing program, covering a number of subject exams in grades 3 through 12. For the annual Milestone exams in grades 3 through 8, students are tested in the Spring on their grade-level proficiencies in English/Language Arts and Math.  Students in grades 5 and 8 take additional grade-level tests in Science and Social Studies.

Student performance on the Georgia Milestones is reported in one of four categories – Beginning Learner, Developing Learner, Proficient Learner, and Distinguished Learner. These levels are intended to reflect student mastery of the content area in each grade level. The state examines the data based on the top three levels (developing and higher) and top two levels of student performance (proficient and higher).

Coweta County School System students outperformed or matched the state in all assessment area.  Higher percentages of Coweta students scored in the top three categories than state averages in all 16 exams. Higher percentages of Coweta students scored in the top two categories in 15 of 16 of the exams (scoring the same in 3rd grade math).

The chart below compares this year's average performance rates for the Coweta County School System and the state of Georgia:

The Coweta County School System also showed improvement in performance from 2017 to 2018.  The percentage of students scoring in the top two and top three categories on the Milestones exams in 2018 showed increases in approximately two-thirds of grade and subject areas over 2017 performance rates.

“As a school system, we continue to focus on student achievement as measured by several indicators.  Milestone exams are one of those indicators, and we have continued to show improvement overall and continued to outperform the state as well,” said Superintendent Steve Barker.  “Those results are thanks to the hard work of our students and parents, teachers and school system employees, and the support of our community.”

“We are already analyzing and reviewing this data for school improvement purposes, and we anticipate a great new school year,” said Barker.
