High school football fans urged to bring a can for the Coweta County Food Pantry October 30

High school football fans are urged to make donation to the Coweta County Food Pantry at this Friday’s East Coweta, Newnan or Northgate High School home games.

All three Coweta County high schools are playing at home this Friday, October 30. East Coweta’s Indians play Riverdale at Shoemake Stadium; the Newnan Cougars play Mundy’s Mill at Drake Stadium; Northgate’s Vikings play Sandy Creek at Seldon Field. The games – which start at 7:30 p.m. – are also Senior Night for the three high schools.

Attending fans can donate food items or cash when at all three home games, to fill immediate needs at the Coweta County Food Pantry.

The home-game Can-A-Thon drive will officially will officially kick-off the 2009 annual food drive for the three high schools, and for the school system as a whole.

Coweta County’s elementary, middle and high schools are the main drivers behind the annual Coweta County Can-A-Thon each year.

Students, families and teachers generally donate upwards of 90 percent of the food items and cash donations raised through the schools during the October and November drive.

Because of difficult economic times, the Coweta County Food Pantry is short of food items now, even as this year’s Can-A-Thon gears up.

Donations made at this Friday’s high school football games will count towards the Can-A-Thon drive totals at the highly-competitive high schools. One dollar in cash donations made at the gates will count towards three food items.

Donations won’t go towards a ticket or other prizes, but they will go immediately to restock pantry shelves. All 30 of Coweta’s schools will continue their drives through Thanksgiving.

Football fans are being asked to help Coweta’s three high schools raise food items and cash donations for the Coweta County food Pantry this weekend, as all three high schools hold home games on Friday, October 30. Coweta County Junior Service League Chair (and county Can-a-Thon Chair) Lora Beck (left) and Food Pantry director Derinda Rowe (right), urged attendees at this weekend’s games to bring a can, box or make a donation at the gate. Standing behind Beck and Rowe are, left to right, East Coweta High Principal Rick Waggoner and ECHS Indian Zack Fore; Northgate High Principal Therese Reddekopp and Viking Toby Slagle; and Newnan High Principal Doug Moore and Cougar Xander Ogletree.
