The Coweta County Board of Education
approved calendars for the upcoming 2009-10 and 2010-11 school
years at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 9.
The 2009-10 calendar adopted by the Board will begin school on
Friday August 7, 2009 and end the school year on Friday, May 28,
2010. The 2010-11 school calendars will begin on Thursday,
August 5, 2010 and end the school year on Friday, May 27, 2011.
Both calendars follow a similar structure to the 180-day school
year calendars used in previous years in Coweta County Schools.
The approved calendars finish the 90-day first semester in the
last week of December, before the Christmas and New Year’s
holiday break, and add a Monday holiday after the Friday teacher
work-day in mid-October. The calendars also retain the current
full-week Winter break in late February and the full-week Spring
Break during the first full week of April.
Both school calendars are posted online at
http://www.cowetaschools.org/calendars_menus.htm.
The school board considered several options for upcoming school
calendars, including a version that began the school year later
in August and ended the first semester in January, after the
Christmas and New Year’s break.
Several calendars were posted online for public comment (via an
online survey) through December 4.
Over 3,000 responses were gathered through the survey. 48
percent of respondents indicated a preference for the calendars
adopted by the board on Tuesday. 32 percent indicated preference
for the calendars that began school later in August, and 20
percent indicated a preference for calendars that were similar
to the versions adopted but did not include the October holiday. |
