Middle school technology summer camp at CEC registering through June 7

The Central Educational Center is taking registration through June 7 for the “2008 Yes!” middle school summer camp - a summer manufacturing technology program offered June 23-27 for rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders (this year’s middle schoolers).

CEC’s first-ever summer manufacturing camp will feature hands-on training in drafting, robotics and welding. Activities include instruction, lectures from industry and business guests, as well as hands-on technology projects.

The cost is $200 per student, and the class will also include two field trips, daily guest speakers at lunch, student copies of Pro Desktop and SolidWorks drafting software for every student, a starter robotics for students to take home and build, t-shirts, a sports backpack and other perks. The classes include lunch and morning and afternoon snacks for students.

The summer class is designed to introduce middle school students to highly skilled techniques of modern manufacturing. The class is taught by CEC pre-engineering and robotics instructor Scott Brown and West Central Technical College instructor Jeremy Jenkins.

Classes last from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. over the five-day camp, and are held at CEC’s Newnan campus. 32 slots in all are available, and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

To register, parents can visit camp director Brown’s CEC webpage at www.gacec.com/Staff/browns and follow the links to the 2008 Yes! Summer Camp. An email link to the, course calendar link, and a summer camp registration form link can be found on the page.

Parents are urged to submit the form via email, or they can come by the CEC between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and fill out a form to secure a class spot. The $200 registration fee must be paid by the first day of class.

The class is underwritten by a $5,000 grant from the Nuts and Bolts and Thingamajig Foundation, a national organization that fosters local programs to introduce young people to the skills “that will help create the next generation of artisans, inventors, engineers, repairmen and skilled workers.” The Yokogawa Corporation, Newnan Advanced Chiropractic, Southern educational Systems and Learning Lab are also major sponsors of the CEC camp.

The Central Educational Center – located on Martin Luther King Drive in Newnan – can be reached at 678-423-2000.
