Lesley Goodwin named Principal of Poplar Road Elementary for 2008-09

The Coweta County Board of Education has named Lesley Goodwin as the new principal of Poplar Road Elementary School for the upcoming year. Goodwin - currently the assistant principal of Thomas Crossroads Elementary School – will succeed Rebecca Gibson, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Goodwin will begin in the new post on July 1.

Goodwin has taught in the Coweta County School System for all of her teaching career, beginning as a 3rd grade teacher at Eastside Elementary in 1995. During her six years at Eastside she also taught as a Title I Technology teacher. Goodwin was named assistant principal at Evans Middle School in 2002, and moved to Thomas Crossroads Elementary as an assistant principal in 2006.

Goodwin earned her Bachelor’s degree from Lagrange College in Early Childhood Education in 1995, her Master’s in Educational Leadership from the State University of West Georgia 2002, her Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Samford University in 2005. She is currently working to complete a Doctorate as well.

The Board of Education named Goodwin upon the recommendation of Superintendent Blake Bass, during a called session on Wednesday, May 21. During that meeting, the Board also discussed the school system’s budget for the upcoming 2008-09 school year.

The Board discussed a preliminary presentation from Superintendent Bass of a Fiscal Year 2009 operational budget of $175.9 million for the 2008-09 school year. The budget projects no increase of the School Board’s Maintenance and Operation 2007 property tax rate of 18.59 mills.

The Board is expected to vote on preliminary adoption of a final budget on May 27, at 7:30 a.m., in preparation for final adoption Tuesday, June 9.

Preliminary adoption of the budget will allow for advertisement of the proposal and final adoption later in June, before the start of the new fiscal year on July 1, 2008.
